Hiram E. Leonard Diary, March 30 - April 5, 1870
“30th Wednesday A cool cloudy disagreeable day I did my choars at the house this morning for the last time at present, was at the office all day & stayed all night & went to bed about 10 oclock, sick George Barrus mooved into my house today & stayed tonight for the first night & did my choars it rained Caroline & George a papering.
“31st Thursday A cold misty disagreeable day I did my choars at the store & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out _____________ a papering.
“April 1st Friday A cloudy cold damp disagreeable day I did my choars at the store was there all day & night & went to bed about 10 nearly sick and worne out Caroline was sick but papered.
“2nd Saturday rather more pleasant & the sun shone conciderable was a fine evening I did my choars at the store & went to bed at about 10 nearly sick etc Caroline was about sick but papered some & scrubed some.
“3rd Sunday A most beautiful day with a cold air the ground dryed fast, I did my choars at the store & Caroline & I & Wallace went up to the house I grafted 4 cherry trees & came back between 2 & 3 I found George Sidwell pretty tight so that we could not make him hear to let us in & I had to get in to the cellar window & onlock the door I choared round & went to bed about 9 sick & worne out George had spoiled some paper [in margin] George Sidwell got drunk & spoiled some paper for one room.
“4th Monday rather fine weather & a getting dry cool nights I did my choars at the store & was at the store all the time shut up about ½ past 8 & went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.
“5th Tuesday fine weather but cool nights & cool air I did my choars at store & was here all the time shut up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick Caroline cleaning house.”
