Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 5 - 11, 1874
“5th Wednesday light shower I did my choars was round home all day closed up at 8 and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & tiered out.
“6th Thursday A fine pleasant day I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick etc My old cow went to the bull this afternoon.
“7th Friday fine dry & pretty hot weather I did my choars was at the office all day closed up about 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with rheumatism Mrs Laura Lewis came here about 7 while we were eating breckfust & stayed till after 2 oclock.
“8th Saturday A fine pleasant dry hot day I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiered out Hurbot Hollister broak into Greens Store & stole some things.
“9th Sunday A fine dry hot day I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to farm a little before noon & went to bed about 9 sick over 90 degrees above zero Frank Wellman was at Winfield & German says he got a paper from a stranger & red it & appeared to feel disturbed by something & rested but little after that, but seemed uneasy.
“10th Monday A fine hot day & verry dry I did my choars was round home all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiered Frank Wellman came in the stage from Winfield & stopped at my paster well & said he would pump some water sent me a line to bring up his overcoat & some crackers when I came up to milk, I tryed to get him down to my store or to Kenyons but could not, I went up again in the evening about 8 ½ or 9 & carried him up some more things to eat & drink & to cover him up but he would not come down to the store.
“11th Tuesday fine dry hot weather I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiered Frank Wellman came down from my house to the store about 4 ½ oclock & stayed till dark then he went to D Kenyons to stay over night & stayed till about 3 oclock tomorrow morning when he went up to my farm & I found him in my hovel asleep when I went to milk.”
