Hiram E. Leonard Diary, July 8 - 14, 1874
“8th Wednesday A find hod day I did my choars was round all day closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold & the rheumatism the thurmometer stood at about 100, & over all the week up to now F Wellman came back.
“9th Thursday rather a fine hot day I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 nearly sick with the rheumatism Watson & Barrus stacked some of my hay drew 4 loads down here Caroline & Emma washed today.
“10th Friday A fine warme day I did my choars was around the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with the rheumatism Emma Barrus went to D. C. Browns to work today Watson finished stacking my hay.
“11th Saturday A fine & rather cool day I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold & the rheumatism A fine cool damp Emma Barrus came back tonight & stayed over night.
“12th Sunday rather a fine cool dry day except in the middle it was hot I did my choars was round home the most of the day & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & a cold & rheumatism.
“13th Monday fine hot dry weather I did my choars was round home all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick with rheumatism.
“14th Tuesday A fine pleasant hot day windy day & everything verry dry I did my choars choared round home all day closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with rheumatism __________ second large fire in Chicago this afternoon & tonight commenced at 4 or 5 oclock & the wind blew so that they could not stop it commenced on Clark & 12th Street and burned North East to Michigan Avenue and Harrison or Van Buren Streets & consumed five or six million worth of property Frank Wellman left here this morning for Chicago and was at the fire.”
