Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 30, 1874 - January 5, 1875
“30th Wednesday fine cool winter weather & dry I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 nearly sick with the rheumatism & a cold Mary Connell came home from Chicago.
“31st Thursday fine winter weather I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with the rheumatism & a cold Mary Connells bough came to Connells tonight.
“January 1st Friday 1875 fine weather for the season but dry I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 nearly sick with the rheumatism etc A very still New Years snow squalled some Young Oconnell the tea agent started for St Louis about 4 PM.
“2nd Saturday fine weather for the winter but dry I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick with the rheumatism & a cold.
“3rd Sunday A cold & some cloudy day but fine winter weather & dry I did my choars was round the house all day writing some etc went to bed at about 9 nearly sick with the rheumatism & a cold.
“4th Monday fine cool winter weather & dry I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick.
“5th Tuesday fine cool dry winter day I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick with the rheumatism Mrs Laura Lewis died at the Shakers in New Lebanon today or tomorrow.”
