Hiram E. Leonard Diary, July 4 - 10, 1872
“4th Thursday A fine cool pleasant day the most beautiful fourth of July that I can recolect of seeing I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick Emma Stone was here there was a picknick in T Jones woods & at Carpenters Grove My folks went to T Jones Woods the two Emmas went to Danby to the fireworks & Emma Stone then went to Turner to a ball with Jerome Beardsly & wife.
“5th Friday A fine cool pleasant day I did my choars choared round some was a making out my P O Returns etc closed up at about 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ Emma Barrus came here.
“6th Saturday A fine hot dry day I did my choars choared round some finished P.O. returns, closed up at 8 & went to bed at about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick My red line backed cow calved had a fine red calf bull They got about 2 feet of water in my well & stone up some.
“7th Sunday A fine pleasant warm day, and verry dry I did my choars choared round some was up to the place 2 or 3 times went to bed about 9 Emma Stone & Caroline took a ride to Naperville between 3 & 4 or about 4 got back about 6 & Em Stone went back to Naperville.
“8th Monday fine hot dry weather I did my choars choared round the most of the day closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.
“9th Tuesday verry hot dry weather everything ________________ I did my choars choared round some during the day closed up at 8 & went to bed about 10 nearly sick The ground very dry.
“10th Wednesday verry hot & dry grass & parsters a drying up I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”
