Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 5 - 11, 1871
“5th Wednesday fine dry warme weather I did my choars was at the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out [in margin] baby sick Mrs Scovel died today at Bellevue Iowa.
“6th Thursday fine pleasant dry weather & hot, I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick etc Mrs Scovil was buried [in margin] Dr Pratt came here.
“7th Friday A fine pleasant warme dry day I did my choars choaring round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick the baby is quite sick & has been all the week & very sick yesterday & today with lung feever [in margin] Dr Pratt came to see baby.
“8th Saturday A fine warme dry day & windy I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick, the baby is quite sick but is better today & a getting better.
“9th Sunday A fine pleasant day but more cool and dry I did my choars was round the house the most of the day a choaring etc I went to Mr Barruses toward night came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick the baby is better.
“10th Monday rather fine cool rainey weather to ________ a wet day & cold spit some round snow or frozen rain I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring round closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out [in margin] rained today.
“11th Tuesday A cold windy blustering day a tedious day I did my choars was at the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick.”
