Hiram E. Leonard Diary, July 13 - 19, 1870
“13th Wednesday fine hot weather & heavey showers during the night with thunder & lightning continually I did my choars was at the office all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.
“14th Thursday A fine day & verry hot some rain today and thunder showers tonight, I did my choars was at the office all day a choaring round some I closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.
“15th Friday A fine hot day & verry hot with showers in evening I did my choars was at the office all day a choaring round closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out Congress adjourned today, the French government declared war against Prusia, and our President called an extra session.
“16th Saturday A fine day & verry hot I did my choars was around the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.
“17th Sunday A fine hot day still in the morning & a fine air in middle of the day I choared round some wrote some etc wrote some & went to bed near noon, went to bed at 9 nearly sick & tiered out with the heat etc [in margin] thurmometer ranged at from 40 to 100 the most of the for 3 week _________ now before & after.
“18th Monday fine weather & verry hot I did my choars was round the house the most of the day closed up at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with heat.
“19th Tuesday fine & verry hot weather I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with the heat [in margin] Mrs Stone came.”
