Hiram E. Leonard Diary, March 16, 1870
“16th Wednesday rather a winter day with sleighs I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.
“17th Thursday rather more fine but cool, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.
“18th Friday rather fine day & a beautiful night I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.
“19th Saturday rather a fine day but rained near night & in evening some snow went off fast & water high I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 ½ nearly sick & tired out, Charles Leonard came out from Chicago tonight arrived here a little after 6 in stage.
“20th Sunday A cloudy damp day & grew cold in the afternoon & evening & windy a nasty muddy wet day I did my choars was at the house the most of the day a choaring round went to office about one with McKee came back wrote some & was at the office in the evening came home and went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lame Charles Leonard was here all day & could not go out much it was so muddy.
“21st Monday rather fine for March but muddy I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick Charles Leonard started for Chicago in the stage this morning.
“22nd Tuesday rather raw weather & muddy & snowed a little last night I did my choars was at the office all day came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out I got up about one oclock this morning with my young cow & she had a calf about 2 oclock this morning with my young cow [in margin] old cow calved about 2 ½ in afternoon.”
