Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 1 - 7, 1872
“August 1st Thursday A fine day with a cool breeze I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.
“2nd Friday A fine pleasant day & dry I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold, Rogers stacked the oats on mine today & stacked Wademans at my place they got through about sunset Chester Smith died this morning about 1 ½ or 2 oclock and William Collings other twin child died about the same time in the morning.
“3rd Saturday A fine pleasant dry day I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 and went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick Chester Smith funeral was today at 2 oclock PM Elder Potter preached Wm D Smith came from Michigan got here 11 ½ in the stage Emma Anesworth came down to funeral & came here to stay, Caroline, Frenches girl & Emma Stone went to Naperville in a buggy Pet cow taken sick.
“4th Sunday A fine pleasant day with a cool air and hot sun I did my choars choared round some went to bed about 9 nearly sick Kenyon and Mrs Emma Anesworth went up to Roots after Hotta her girle Emma Barrus went a riding with Clark French.
“5th Monday rather fine weather but dry I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 and went to bed tiard and nearly sick with a cold Caroline Emma Anesworth, Emma Barrus & the children went to Naperville to the circus ____________ Rogers carried them and Daniel Kenyon went down in the stage and came back with Ed Rogers & the women Emma Barrus went to work for Mrs Tompson tonight.
“6th Tuesday rather fine hot dry weather I did my choars choared round & took care of my sick cow pet & had to help her up closed up at 8 & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.
“7th Wednesday fine hot dry weather I did my choars choared round some closed up at 8 & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold I had H Rogers kill me pet cow this morning & bury her as she could not get up or eat.”
