Hiram E. Leonard Diary, May 3 - May 9, 1871
“3rd Wednesday A cloudy damp misty disagreeable day I did my choars choared round & closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out [in margin] William Collings boy died.
“4th Thursday A cloudy cold disagreeable day & rained some I did my choars was choaring round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick rained steddy tonight.
“5th Friday A cold cloudy rainey disagreeable day week so far cleared of tonight I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring etc closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & nearly sick It was rather a cold night for May.
“6th Saturday A cool pleasant morning & a fine day quite warm during the middle of the day A cool night I did my choars choared round in forenoon & fixed my fence between me & Col Warren in afternoon closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick Caroline & Mrs Tard walked to Naperville & back [in margin] My 3 year old white cow went to bull.
“7th Sunday A cool morning with quite a heavy frost rather a cool fine day with some clouds & wind. I did my choars choared round the house & office some wrote some & went to Barruses after supper & back we all went up came back about sunset went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick.
“8th Monday fine warm dry weather cool evenings I did my choars was at the office all day a choaring closed up about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & tired out.
“9th Tuesday a fine day but some cool & dry I did my choars, choared round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick.”
