Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 22 - 28, 1871
“22nd Wednesday fine winter weather & thaws pretty fast I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick.
“23rd Thursday A warme thawey day the snow went off fast & rained some tonight & snow went off fast I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick.
“24th Friday A warm cloudy & had rained the snow most off except drifts, the river began to raise this forenoon & was all over the island at 4 oclock, fell some before morning I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 and went to bed at 9 nearly sick.
“25th Saturday A fine pleasant day the river a little lower in mo in morning, began to rais about noon & was all over the island before night James Tart & Oliver Billings got into the river all over, I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick [in margin] water in the river verry high.
“26th Sunday A snowey morning day several inches fell during the day & the water in the river fell some was warm but grew cold towards night I did my choars was round home till 3 oclock fixed round my stairs etc went to the Kenyons all of us at 3 oclock & took supper I came back about 5 did my choars wrote some & went to bed about 9 nearly sick Wallace was sick with the ear ache.
“27th Monday rather fine for winter but muddy & the river pretty high I did my choars was at the office a choaring all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick.
“28th Tuesday A fine day for winter but muddy I did my choars was at the office all day choaring closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 sick Mrs Scovel was here & stayed all night.”
