Hiram E. Leonard Diary, September 21 - 27, 1870
“21st Wednesday some damp & misty but fine for Sept I did my choars was round the office all day a choaring etc closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & lonely no one here.
“22nd Thursday cloudy damp weather but fine for Sept I did my choars & got my meals, choared round the office all day closed up about at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & lonely Grants wife, Gus Manning & wife & babe came back from Rockford today & went into the house at night.
“23rd Friday some cloudy & damp but the ground verry dry I did my choars got my victuals, & choared round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick etc.
“24th Saturday A cloudy damp misty day I did my choars was round the office a choaring all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & verry lonely.
“25th Sunday A cloudy damp day & mist some in forenoon I was at home till one oclock a doing up my house work & washing the dishes, about one I went up to the farm to Barruses & got dinner, came back & called at Grants at the Bliss house between 2 & 3 got home about 3, wrote some choared some etc choared round & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick [in margin] Ann Wm McNellys wife died today.
“26th Monday rather fine weather some cloudy & cool I did my choars in morning was about, got up at one oclock with a direar was up several times before morning & in morning after the mail left for Winfield I went to the back house & stayed 1 ½ hours before I could get back to the store I was so week from Pukeing & __________ I was verry sick for a few hours could not keep from pukeing did not know but I should die for a while closed up at 8 & went to bed at feeling rather better Lew Baily came back this evening or about dark.
“27th Tuesday rather fine weather but some cloudy I did my choars was round the office all day closed up at 8 & went to bed at 9 about sick etc [in margin] William McNellys wife was buried today.”
