Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 3 - 9, 1870
“3rd Wednesday rather fine warm weather I did my choars choared round office & wrote some closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with the hot weather Caroline went to Aurora with G Barrus, he went after a girle for Earnest Woolf Gary cutting hay for George up to Pollard [in margin] Caroline went to Aurora Jerry F Pollard was tite and laid on my steps.
“4th Thursday rather a fine pleasant day I did my choars and choared round the office some etc closed up at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.
“5th Friday rather pleasant weather but dry & pretty hot I did my choars was at the office all day & choared some closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.
“6th Saturday rather a fine warm day, a cloudy night & began to rain some time during the night I did my chaors was at the office all day closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ old Mrs Cooper towards Batavia died this morning at about 2 oclock.
“7th Sunday A cloudy morning & rained steddy & shower the most of the day, a fine rain I did my choars choared round the office more or less wrote some went up to the farm came back & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick, we went up to the farm to Barrus towards night or about 3 oclock stayed till it brok away some my cattle look bad [in margin] Caroline went to meeting in evening.
“8th Monday rather fine weather I did my choars was round the office all day choaring etc closed up at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick Georg barrus went to Wheaton & carried Caroline & came back by Winfield & got a barrel Also helped me.
“9th Tuesday rather a fine day some cloudy I did my choars was round home all day choaring in office cloased up at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick Barrus & wife & Caroline went to Aurora to see about her teeth got home after noon came home sick.”
